Dealer Inspire vs OctaneOS: an honest side-by-side for dealers
Dealer Inspire vs OctaneOS compared on who each is built for, site structure, speed, sign-in, ownership, support and pricing model, with a comparison table.
Dealer Inspire and OctaneOS are both dealership website platforms, and that is roughly where the similarity ends. One is a large, mature, OEM-certified platform owned by Cars.com. The other is a focused platform built by a small web design studio for independent and used car dealers.
This post lays out the differences plainly. We build OctaneOS, so read it knowing that, but we have tried to be fair, and there are dealers for whom Dealer Inspire is the correct choice.
Who each platform is for
Dealer Inspire is widely used by franchise stores and dealer groups. It is certified under most manufacturer website programs, which matters because those programs commonly require a certified provider and reimburse part of the cost through co-op. If that describes your store, the certification alone may settle the question.
OctaneOS is built for independent dealers, used car lots, buy-here-pay-here operations, and used departments that want their own site outside the franchise template. Nobody in that group is bound to a certified vendor, so the comparison is about fit, speed and cost rather than compliance.
Structure: how the site and the dashboard fit together
Every OctaneOS dealership gets a custom-designed website built by Designer Digital in Next.js, deployed on Vercel's global CDN, plus the OctaneOS dashboard at app.octaneos.net. The dashboard and the website are one system. A price change, a new photo, a sold status: each is live on the site in about a second.
Many legacy dealer platforms are structured differently, with the website on one side, inventory arriving through a scheduled feed on the other, and a support team in between for changes to the site itself. Dealers often tell us that the gap between "I changed it" and "it is live" is measured in hours, and that some changes require a ticket.
We cannot speak to Dealer Inspire's internal architecture, and it has changed over the years. Ask them directly how long a price change takes to appear and which changes you can make yourself.
Speed
Speed matters most on a phone, in a parking lot, on cellular data. A large share of used car shopping happens exactly there.
OctaneOS sites are Next.js pages served from Vercel's CDN edge nearest the shopper. Photos uploaded from a phone are resized into WebP variants automatically, so a 20-photo gallery does not push several megabytes to someone on a weak signal. The analytics are cookieless, so there is no consent banner sitting on top of the page.
Do your own test. Run a mobile page speed check on a few live Dealer Inspire customer sites and a few OctaneOS sites, and compare the inventory page and a vehicle page on each.
Sign-in and team access
OctaneOS uses Google sign-in or a one-time email code. There are no passwords to forget, reuse or write on a sticky note. Roles are owner, admin and member, and an audit log records every change so you can see who did what.
I worked at a dealership before I built OctaneOS, and shared logins were normal on the sales floor. Many legacy platforms still rely on username and password logins, and once a password is shared, nobody can say who changed a price or deleted a listing.
Ownership and lock-in
With OctaneOS, the site is designed for your dealership, the subscription has no long-term contract, and you never wait on a vendor to update your own inventory. If your site key leaks, you rotate it in one click. Deleted vehicles sit in a 30-day trash. Sold vehicle pages stay live so their URLs keep the Google rankings they have earned.
Ask any vendor, including us, what happens on the day you decide to leave: what you keep, what you lose, and how long it takes.
Support
Dealer Inspire operates a large support organization suited to dealer groups with many rooftops, and dealers commonly speak well of it.
OctaneOS support is a small studio team. Designer Digital built your site and built the platform, so when you email, the person answering knows both. Because routine work (inventory, pricing, promotions, leads) happens in the dashboard rather than through tickets, most dealers need support rarely.
Pricing model
Dealer Inspire's pricing is quoted by their team and we will not guess at it here. Franchise stores frequently offset part of it with OEM co-op, which changes the math considerably.
OctaneOS is a one-time design and build fee for your custom website, then one monthly subscription per dealership for the platform. There is no long-term contract, no listing cap and no per-vehicle fee. We quote pricing on a short call because the design work varies; contact us for that.
Side-by-side
| Dealer Inspire | OctaneOS | |

| Owned by | Cars.com | Designer Digital |
| Built for | Franchise stores and dealer groups | Independent and used car dealers |
| OEM program certification | Yes, widely | Not applicable |
| Website | Provided through the platform | Custom-designed Next.js site on Vercel |
| Inventory updates | Ask; many legacy platforms use scheduled feeds | Live on the site in about a second |
| Sign-in | Ask; many legacy platforms use username and password | Google or one-time email code |
| Roles and audit log | Ask | Owner, admin, member; every change logged |
| Analytics | Ask | Cookieless, weekly Monday digest |
| Promotions | Ask | Self-serve, scheduled, placed anywhere on the site |
| Support | Large support organization | Small studio team that built your site |
| Contract | Ask | No long-term contract |
| Pricing | Quoted by their team | One-time build fee plus a monthly subscription, quoted on a call |
Where the table says "Ask", it is because we do not want to state something about another vendor's product as fact. Ask them the question and compare the answers side by side.
What OctaneOS does not do
OctaneOS is not OEM-certified and does not carry manufacturer incentive feeds, so it is not a fit for a franchise store bound to a program. It is not a full CRM either. It is the inventory, leads, promotions and analytics platform behind your website. If you run a full CRM with desking and F&I, OctaneOS handles the website and the lead inbox, not the desking.
A fair summary
Choose Dealer Inspire if you are a franchise store under an OEM program, part of a large group, or want a vendor whose scale matches yours.
Choose OctaneOS if you are an independent or used car dealer who wants a fast custom site, inventory that goes live the moment you save it, passwordless sign-in for your team, and one subscription without a long contract.
